REBUILD ROCKAWAY

Do you know the feeling when you are sitting at home watching the news of a disaster that happened elsewhere and you have no control of? Not this time, as you know a major storm - Sandy have hit us here and the hardest part of it all is recovering.

A few buddies and I packed our bags and headed to Rockaway Beach to Drop off some warm gear and whatever we can offer to help the much NEEDED in the Far Rockaways. As we got closer to the water on Ocean Parkway, we reach the Brighton Beach Area of Brooklyn and we started to sense the sorrow. Cars was parked all weird and the windows of the cars was all fogged by, all the cars was washed up from the storm and for the ones who still had any heart left was trying to clean and air out their vehicles.

As we got closer to the bike trail to Rockaway Beach we usually take, there wasn't any trail left. It is all covered with sand and gated off with a Fence. We all had a feeling like, F*CK!! this is bad but it was just the beginning. We all got on the side of the Belt Parkway highway and singled lane along the bike trail all the way down to Marine Parkway Bridge.

We reach to the beginning of Rockaway Beach & Breezy Point and the parking lot where beach goers usually park their cars is used as a DUMP zone. We biked by the residential private houses and it looked and felt like a monster came through and just flipped the house inside out. It was not bike-able, the path was covered with mud and debris from the beach and Houses. It was a awful feeling to see but there is definitely a sign of HOPE and to rebuild.

Words can only express so much, we had to do our part and dropped our donations to the Rockaway Beach Surf Club on B87. We gather ourself and started to head out via the Cross bay Bridge and headed into Queens because we couldn't go the way we came.

I hope you enjoy the photos below
please do your part and help out the much needed people suffering.

(I'm thinking of planning another ride this Sunday Nov 11 to Hoboken NJ, which was hit really hard from the storm also, contact me if you would like to contribute)

Oh Sandy.............

luckily our family and friends are all safe and sound from this spiteful storm that hit us pretty hard here in the Tri state - Manhattan, New Jersey, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

some of us might have it good, well, okay, just OK, "couldn't been worse", but we all know from watching or listening to the news that the recovery for the storm in certain areas like Rockaway Beach (Queens), Long Island, Long Beach, Staten Island, Lower East Side, Hoboken NJ is breath taking.

The temperature is dropping here in New York/ NJ and its scary to think how cold and hungry these people can be, A few buddies and I are packing up some warm clothes and anything we can spare that can help them. If you are reading this and is not too late and you would like to join us. We are meeting at Prospect park Brooklyn at the Grand Army Plaza Entrance at 12 Noon.

pitch in and help somehow, someway // every one adds a count

Bundle up !!
Stay Safe!!

Greetings from Zach in North Wildwood NJ

My name is Zach Balakas, I'm from New Jersey. I've always been into bikes since I was a kid. Had my Knight Rider Big Wheel when I was super young and I wore the wheels off that thing, literally. Then came a Huffy with training wheels and I remember it had a cobra on the seat, I was so pumped on it and I was constantly riding that thing around my neighborhood. Training wheels came off, scraped up both knees and elbows in the same fall, got back on it until I figured out how to ride it.

As I got older, I went from one bike to the next, just destroying them because I was always on them, jumping them, riding around my town until it was dark and my mom would call me home for dinner. There was never a time that I wasn't on my bike. As I was growing out of my current bikes, I got into BMX and started to figure out how everything works and took my own bike apart, painted it, put it back together, learned the ins and outs.

A few years later, I became a certified mechanic at a shop where I worked on the weekends through my college days, and till this day I am still a bike mechanic simply because I love bikes. I love how they come together to serve a purpose, but more importantly to provide a feeling. A feeling that I had when I was a kid, and even now at age 30, I still have the same feeling when I ride. It's fun. For those of you that ride, you know exactly what I'm talking about. When you're on that saddle, pedaling, whether it be down a wide open road going full speed, mashing through traffic in the city, or even just a quick run to the store, you forget about all the troubles of the day, all the bills that are due, or homework piling up, and your life is fun and simple. That's why I ride, for the simplistic fact that my life is fun and my bike frees me from the everyday BS and let's me be happy.

That is why I'm Never Not Riding. It's my therapy.

Tucson Arizona - NNR

This is amazing how I am about to post this article from someone I consider a Friend. A friend from all the other side of the states - Tucson Arizona. I had to just google map this and he is 2 Thousand 500 miles away. That is equivalent to 40 hours by car and about 235 hours by bike lol.

(I apologize in advance if you don't enjoy my style of "freeblogging" meaning I say what's on my mind, for those who don't mind it. Thank you and hope you stay with me on this NNR journey)

Justin from Instagram @jweeeks reach out to me regarding the NNR Decals and I was please enough to throw a stamp on it. Big ups to Justin for taking the time and effort to take these lovely photos and sharing this with us, I appreciate it a lot and would love to keep all of our readers informed from Tucson Arizona !!

Never Not Riding in Tucson

I have to ride everyday or I feel like something’s missing, Tucson is a great place to ride. There are so many different trails, routes, and variations of rides. Cycling is a year round thing in Tucson, the sun is out majority of the year and rarely ever rains.  Tucson is a great place to ride because if I’m able to take it here and not want to bike in another city, then it must be. I wouldn’t wake up for a morning ride at 6am everyday to ride, because it wouldn’t be worth it to go.  I ride on sick days. I ride on rest days. I ride everyday.
I love climbing on track bikes because it’s more challenging. I like to ride big ratios, because it makes me stronger. Tucson has a full range of climbs from Cat 5 all the way to HC climbs. Tucson feeds my urge to Never Not Ride because of the beautiful landscape, perfect weather, and the vast amounts of routes.
